What is an Asscher Cut?
The Asscher cut is one of the most iconic and elegant diamond cuts.

This special cut was first created in 1902 by Joseph Asscher, a Dutch jeweller and founder of the Royal Asscher Diamond Company. It was also one of the first diamond cuts to be patented, ensuring its exclusivity during the early 20th century. The design gained immense popularity during the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s due to its clean lines and symmetrical form, which perfectly aligned with the geometric trends of the era.

What Sets the Asscher Cut Apart?

The Asscher cut is a type of step cut, similar to the emerald cut, but with a square shape and cropped corners that give it an octagonal appearance. Unlike brilliant cuts that focus on sparkle, the Asscher cut uses large, parallel facets to create a hall-of-mirrors effect, giving the diamond a unique combination of depth and clarity.

The Asscher cut is typically square with a high crown and small table, creating a balanced, symmetrical look. The cropped corners enhance its octagonal silhouette, making it distinct from traditional square or rectangular shapes. Because of its open, step-cut facets, the Asscher cut requires diamonds with excellent clarity, as any imperfections are more visible than in other cuts.

Modern Variations: The Royal Asscher Cut

In 2001, the Asscher family introduced a modern version of the original design called the Royal Asscher Cut. This updated cut features 74 facets (compared to the traditional 58) for increased brilliance and fire. The Royal Asscher Cut is patented and widely recognised for its superior craftsmanship.
